"The European Women of Achievement Luncheon is the major annual event. The Luncheon culminates with the announcement of the Award winners and the Presentation of the Awards. The names of the Award winners are a closely kept secret until the formal announcement."

 

This year’s winners are:

Arts & Media: (Sponsored by The Hearst Corporation and presented by Louise Court Editor Cosmopolitan )

Winner: Marin Alsop: Principal Conductor, Bournemouth Symphony and Music Director Baltimore Symphony

American-born Marin Alsop, Principal Conductor of the Bournemouth Symphony and Music Director of the Baltimore Symphony, who is currently working in the USA, sent this message: “This award is very special because it’s related to my work in Europe and the UK. It’s a validation of all I have done there – so I feel as if I have been adopted!”

Winners: Laura Wade-Gery: Chief Executive Officer, Tesco.com and Claire Thomas: Senior Vice President, Human Resources International, GlaxoSmithKline.

Laura Wade-Gery, chief executive of Tesco.com, said: ‘I am proud to have been chosen for this award, especially as I respect and admire so many of the other nominees.

‘Talent is talent, whatever a person’s gender or background, and dynamic businesses such as Tesco are committed to developing their people. We are fortunate to have an ever-expanding pool of great staff in many countries and that enables us to exchange ideas and experience. This award is special because it celebrates goals that we all share, regardless of the countries or organisations we represent.’

Before joining Tesco.com, which is the world’s biggest online grocery retailer, she worked for Gemini Consulting and Kleinwort Benson. She is also a non-executive director of Trinity Mirror plc.

Claire Thomas was responsible for getting GSK employees across 44 culturally diverse countries to agree to a common vision for Europe. She is now responsible for 15,000 staff across 100 countries and chaired GSK’s European Employee Consultation Forum.

Claire said: "It’s wonderful to receive this award and to be amongst many other eminent winners. I'd like to pay tribute to GSK, which is such a great company, especially in the way it encourages women to fulfil their career aspirations. And of course I cannot forget all my colleagues whose support over the years has been invaluable."

Winner: Kelly Hoppen: Managing Director, Kelly Hoppen Interiors.

Kelly Hoppen , who started her design business when she was just seventeen said: “It’s a fabulous award to win, especially as I had to compete against so many high-class entrants. I’ve worked hard to build my business over the years and feel this is recognition of all the effort that has gone into it.”

Kelly Hoppen Interiors has offices in London, Paris and New York, employing 35 staff working on dozens of worldwide projects ranging from chalets to yachts, hotels, private jets and even British Airway’s First Class Cabins.

Winner: Jocelyn Hay: Chairman and Founder of Voice of the Viewer and Listener.


Jocelyn Hay , Chairman and Founder of Voice of the Viewer and Listener said: “This is absolutely marvellous. I have worked with colleagues across Europe for many years so this award really fits the bill. I hope it encourages more women to look towards Europe to build working partnerships.”

Mrs Hay set up VLV in 1983 to combat plans to turn BBC Radio 4 into an all news and current affairs channel. She then went on to establish the European Alliance of Listeners and Viewers Associations and became a trustee of Mediawise which helps train journalists in Eastern Europe and the developing world. She was made a CBE in 2005.

Winner: Lucy Neville-Rolfe: Executive Director, Corporate and Legal Affairs, Tesco.


Lucy Neville-Rolfe, director of corporate and legal affairs at Tesco, said: ‘It is a huge honour to receive this award and to have been nominated alongside such talented women. These awards show that business and society recognise commitment and professionalism from diverse backgrounds. I have been fortunate to have been involved in the success of Tesco across Europe in the last 10 years in new and older member states. This follows a challenging and rewarding career in Government. I owe much to the teams who have helped me, including many women, and to my four boys who keep me on my toes.’

Lucy has also held senior positions in the Cabinet Office, at the Department of Trade and Industry and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. She was made a Companion of the Order of St. Michael and St. George (CMG) in the 2005 Queen's Birthday Honours list in recognition of her contribution to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office Board.

Over the years the Awards have recognized many talented, resourceful and courageous women who have contributed to pan-European understanding and progress. Their success is just cause for European celebration.
